THE NHL PARTNERS WITH SAP

Since first taking to the ice in 1917 the National Hockey League (NHL®) has seen amazing growth. From the first puck dropped, the method of capturing, formatting, and distributing NHL statistics has evolved as much as the game itself. As the official cloud software provider of the NHL, SAP collaborated with the League on the transformation of the NHL's statistics platform on NHL.com to provide real-time insight for fans to be able to dive into the world of hockey like never before.

APPROACHABLE. DIGESTABLE. CONTEXTUAL.
We created a whole new experience for fans to engage with the world of NHL hockey statistics. This went beyond updating the visual look and feel but providing fans with a whole new set of tools to go deeper and deeper into the game.
Remember that time at the bar during the Stanley Cup Finals when you were arguing over which player had the most all-time points in the playoffs, who weighed under 155 lbs., was shorter than 5'5'', and was Canadian?
In 97 years there have been...
GIVE A FACE TO THE NUMBER
Our goal was to humanize the stats to bring to life the fan's heroes of the game.
INTERACT WITH MORE LEADERS
Fans want to know more than just who the top leader is: they want to get a sense of the leading pack.
GIVE CONTEXT
Without knowing the average, fans have no sense of where the leaders stand compared to the rest of the league.

CONTEXTUALIZE PERFORMANCES
How might we recognize players that might not be on the leaderboard but are playing really well at the moment?
HIGHLIGHT VIDEO CONTENT
How might we leverage one of the NHL's strongest assets?
MAKE NEW STATS APPROACHABLE
With the introduction of enhanced stats to the NHL, how might we go beyond a table of numbers to give a context for caring?
HIGHLIGHTING EDITORIAL CONTENT
How might we drive fans to other areas of the NHL ecosystem where stats are being used for storytelling?
CONTENT MODULES THAT INVITE
How might we spark curiosity to get avid fans to go deeper and help casual fans understand the game better?
NHL STATS PRIOR
TO RE-DESIGN

From players to teams, the NHL has an incredible amount of data within the hockey stats landscape. Our mission was to unlock the full potential of this vast wealth of information to bring the game to life in new and meaningful ways for fans.
ONE CENTRAL
PLACE FOR STATS

We introduced a brand new statistics
homepage for fans to use as a launch pad
into the NHL stats ecosystem.
DESIGNED FOR FANS

In bringing fans and the NHL through our creative process, the result was a high degree of intent behind every aspect of the design.
WINNING THE BAR FIGHT WITH ADVANCED FILTERING

With a wealth of data and a great set of tools, we want to enable fans to be able to tell new and better stories about the sport of hockey and NHL players.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
NHL.com/stats went live February 2015 in the first phase of what will be a multi-phase release of new stat experiences and tools for fans.
OUR PROCESS AT A GLANCE
Every aspect of the design was driven by an understanding of the needs, expectations and aspirations of the people we were designing for -  HOCKEY FANS!
